Simple Leaning Gallery

By now we’ve FINALLY showed you essentially all there is to our Lord Expedit bookshelf. But I wanted to highlight one last detail.

I mentioned it on Tuesday with the ‘White Zone‘ at the top – the gallery section of the bookshelf. Now, if we had the smaller 4×4 version of the shelf, we’d have had a bit more room, but I really like the taller version and even so we still have just enough space for a nicely matted 11×14 frame up there.

I didn’t want to go spending a fortune on new frames, so I re-used the two larger frames I had over the fireplace in DC, plus the inexpensive Beer Art that I’ve previously shared here as well.  Then I picked up a single 8×10 matted frame at Target (on sale plus a discount from the Cartwheel app).  leaning gallery on top of a bookshelf at BandBBuildALife.com

Though I do love the photos I already had in the frames, I wanted to update things a little, especially after our most recent trip to the Outer Banks.  So on to Shutterfly I went to print out a few options.

I printed this photo of Bill & I at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in both color and sepia tone, but decided I liked the color  better.  With a few pieces of washi tape to hold the photo in place (and be easy to remove later) I had some brand new framed characters for the space.leaning gallery on top of a bookshelf at BandBBuildALife.comleaning gallery on top of a bookshelf at BandBBuildALife.com

On the other side of the shelf is the larger 11×14 frame from DC.  ….Or so I thought.  Turns out it was the next size up from an 11×14 and the photo was juuuuust shy of the width the matted opening had.  So instead I turned the paper backing around and taped the photo straight on there.  Looks just like it was matted from afar.

The photo I selected is a self-portrait foot shot of Bill & I in the Bodie Island Lighthouse, the first time we ever had the chance to climb it.

I decided to keep it simple for now, with a mix of color and sepia tone images and just a few additional tchochkies including the awesome crochet cacti that my Mom made for me for Christmas last year, and a lantern I picked up a few years back from Pottery Barn that reminds me a lot of a lighthouse lantern.

So how do you feel about things you put on your walls?  Are you a fan of art or family photos?  Maybe a good mix of the two?
